STARKVILLE, Miss.鈥擳he founding dean of Mississippi State鈥檚 Judy and Bobby Shackouls Honors College is holding a 4 p.m. signing session for his latest work Friday [April 5] at Book Mart and Caf茅 on Main Street in Starkville.

鈥淕atsby鈥檚 Oxford鈥擲cott, Zelda, and the Jazz Age Invasion of Britain: 1904-1929鈥 is Christopher A. Snyder鈥檚 ninth book. In addition to Friday鈥檚 event, Snyder will be available to sign books April 13 at noon in the Writers Tent at Starkville鈥檚 Cotton District Arts Festival.

Recently published by Pegasus Books, 鈥淕atsby鈥檚 Oxford鈥 has been highly praised by Publishers Weekly for offering 鈥渁 fresh reading of (F. Scott) Fitzgerald鈥檚 masterpiece (鈥淭he Great Gatsby鈥) as a novel about the American Dream, wrapped in medieval colors.鈥

The book chronicles the experiences of Americans in Oxford through the聽Great War and the years of聽recovery to 1929, the end of Prohibition and the聽beginning of the Great Depression.

鈥淭his period is interpreted through the pages of 鈥楾he Great Gatsby,鈥 producing a vivid cultural history,鈥 Snyder said.

Also a professor of European history in the 极速六合彩 College of Arts and Sciences鈥 Department of History, Snyder said a diverse group of Americans鈥攑oet T.S. Eliot, polo star Tommy Hitchcock, and F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald鈥攃ame to Oxford in the first quarter of the 20th century, or the Jazz Age, when the Rhodes Scholar program had just begun and the Great War had enveloped much of Europe.

This visit, Snyder said, inspired Fitzgerald to create Jay Gatsby, 鈥渢he Oxford man in the聽pink suit鈥 who represents a 鈥渃ultural reflection of the聽aspirations of many Americans who came to the University of聽Oxford seeking聽beauty, wisdom and social connections.鈥

鈥淎rchival material covering the first American聽Rhodes Scholars聽who came to Oxford during Trinity Term 1919鈥攚hen Jay Gatsby聽claims he studied at Oxford鈥攅nables the narrative to illuminate a detailed portrait of what聽a 鈥榟istorical Gatsby鈥 would have looked like, what he would have聽experienced聽at the postwar university, and who he would have encountered around聽Oxford鈥攁n impressive array of artists including Eliot, W.B. Yeats, Virginia聽Woolf, Aldous Huxley, Evelyn Waugh, Winston Churchill,聽J.R.R.聽Tolkien and C.S. Lewis,鈥 Snyder said.

One of these Americans, Snyder said, was Major William M. Rogers (Mississippi and St. John鈥檚 1911), Mississippi State鈥檚 first Rhodes Scholar. Rogers was a hero at the Western Front during World War I and was put in charge of bringing 150 soldier-students to Oxford for five months during the Armistice. Jay Gatsby confesses to have been part of this project in the novel, Snyder explained.
